New Year Vibes
It’s 2025. Happy New Year! We made it to another year, which is something I am eternally grateful for. In my family, we don’t do resolutions, we do vision boards. We take the time to craft our vision for our lives for the year- whether its a career goal, a financial goal, a thing we hope to save for, a vacation or destination we hope to visit- and we put it front and center in our home as a visual reminder of what we want to bring to our lives. And this year, my design vibes are leaning in a a more playful direction. I call it Elegant Whimsy.
Because I’m so over neutral on neutral on neutral. I want neutral on neutral on bold. Beige with pink plaid. Picasso meets white oak. Colorful mosaic tile meets greige sherpa. I want the clean, classic lines of Shaker with modern, artistic, bold dining chairs.
Cream on beige meets interest and whimsy
Elegant whimsy is all about finding those things that are timeless and pairing them with small standout pieces that are playful and perhaps bold. Maybe it’s a shape. Maybe it’s a color or a pattern. Maybe it’s the texture. But this year, what I don’t want to see is soft cream walls with a soft cream couch with a white oak coffee table and coordinating pillows and linen drapes. I want to add a bold, textural pillow and throw. An oversized, interesting vase. Patterned curtains. A patterned marble counter on the built in book cases that flank the fireplace.
If cabinetry is the canvas on which I want paint your kitchen vibes, in an Elegant Whimsy Vibeboard, I’ll be choosing a neutral, wood tone cabinet and a classic quartz stone, but I’ll pair it with a random mosaic backsplash or a curvy cut of quartz above the stove.
I’ll add elegant brass inlay trim or foot bars to your island, and sculptural stools.
Let’s swap the doors in the butler’s pantry for something with caning and putting a patterned wallpaper on the ceiling.
We’ll trade neutral lampshades on the light fixture above the eat-in kitchen light and adding something fanciful.
On your built in bookcases, let’s swap your adjustable shelves for powder coated steel shelving and add some picture lighting. Let’s turn your books back around so we can see what you read instead of just showing the the page side.
Coffee table refresh with book, book, books.
Let’s paint your bathroom vanity, add some feet to it, swap the hardware, the mirror and the light to give it more vibes.
Let’s flip a coat closet into a bar with antique mirrored walls and jewel-toned cabinetry.
Let’s have fun with design again by pairing timeless investments with whimsical, fanciful. bold details that can change with your mood and your tone.
